Open Lab

Custom task development

Have your task built by the Open Lab team.

If the task your study needs is not in the Task Library, or you need a library task with your own stimuli, the Open Lab team can build it in lab.js. The task is tested before delivery and comes with a report of what was checked.

Adapt a library task

€250 fixed price

Delivery: 5 working days

A paradigm from the Task Library with your own stimuli, response keys, timings, instructions or language. Covers up to about 100 stimulus items or one language; larger adaptations are priced as a standard paradigm or quoted.

Build a standard paradigm

€650 fixed price

Delivery: 2 weeks

A published paradigm that is not yet in the library, built from the original method description.

Custom design

€80 per hour, quoted in advance

Delivery: agreed in the quote

A new procedure, several linked tasks, or unusual response modes. You receive a written quote before any work starts.

Prices for universities and non-profit research, excluding VAT where it applies. Delivery times count from your approval of the written specification.

What you receive

The task in your account

A lab.js task added to your Open Lab tasks, ready to add to a study. The lab.js file is yours to download and edit in the lab.js builder.

A validation report

Trial structure and counts, a check of the stimulus and response timings, a codebook of the data columns the task records, and a check of what is recorded when a participant does not respond.

A preview before you accept

A preview link to run the task yourself. Two rounds of changes within the agreed specification are included.

How an order works

  1. 1

    Send a request

Describe the task below, or name the paper whose method it should follow.

  2. 2

    Agree the specification

We reply with a written specification: trials, stimuli, responses, timings and data columns, with the fixed price or a quote.

  3. 3

    Build and test

The task is built in lab.js and tested with the same automated checks as the tasks in the Task Library, then reviewed by the Open Lab team.

  4. 4

    Preview, accept, pay

You run the preview and request changes. Once you accept the task, you receive the invoice.

Request a task

Sending a request does not commit you to anything. We reply by email with a specification and a price.

Service

0 / 3500 characters. Stimulus files can be sent by email after we reply.

Your name, email and request are stored to answer it, as described in our privacy policy.

Questions

Who owns the task?
You can use, modify and publish the task without restriction. Unless you opt out in the form, Open Lab may add a generic version of the paradigm to the Task Library, without your stimuli, instructions or other study materials.
Can the task use my own images, audio or word lists?
Yes. You send the materials with the specification and confirm that you have the right to use them. They are used only for your task.
Do you need any participant data?
No. Building and testing a task does not involve participant data.
Which plan do I need to run the task?
The task runs in your studies like any other task, within the limits of your current plan. The service itself does not require a subscription. See plans
How do I pay?
By invoice to you, your lab or your institution, payable by bank transfer, or by card. A purchase order number can be added to the invoice. Prices are for universities and non-profit research and exclude VAT where it applies. Companies receive a quote.
What if you are fully booked?
We take up to 4 orders a month. If we cannot start within a week, we tell you the earliest start date before you commit.
