Thesis sponsorship
Open Lab sponsors thesis projects
Bachelor's and master's students whose thesis study needs more than the Free plan can apply for a complimentary Basic plan for six months, renewable once on request. The plan is granted to the student's own account, so the study, its data and the analysis stay with the student after the thesis is submitted.
Who can apply
- You are enrolled as a bachelor's or master's student.
- A named supervisor oversees the thesis.
- Your Open Lab account carries an institutional email address or an ORCID iD.
- The thesis study will run on Open Lab.
What the sponsorship includes
The Free plan allows one study with up to 300 participants, keeps the data for 12 months, previews data quality for five participants and exports CSV. The Basic plan lifts the limits a thesis study is most likely to meet.
Keep the data for the whole thesis and beyond
Data is kept indefinitely rather than deleted after 12 months, so the dataset is still there for the defence, a later publication or a follow-up study.
See which responses to trust
The full data-quality workflow, rather than a preview of five participants, flags inattentive or automated responses before the analysis.
Pilot and main study side by side
Up to five studies, so a pilot, the main study and a revised version can run as separate studies with separate data.
Up to 1,000 participants per study
Participants join through the study link, a QR code or one of up to 1,000 invitations.
Export in the format the analysis needs
Excel and JSON export in addition to CSV.
Any Task Library paradigm
Copy, run and edit the parameters of any paradigm in the Task Library, rather than a single one.
What we ask in return
A sentence in the thesis acknowledging Open Lab
Suggested wording: “The study was run on Open Lab (Shevchenko, 2022).”
Shevchenko, Y. (2022). Open Lab: A web application for running and sharing online experiments. Behavior Research Methods, 54(6), 3118–3125. https://doi.org/10.3758/s13428-021-01776-2
Permission to name your institution
Institutions whose students have been sponsored may be listed on this page later. Students are never named.
A short feedback form at the end of the term
A few questions about what worked and what did not, so the sponsorship and the platform can be improved.

Apply for a thesis sponsorship
Requests are answered by email within five working days. Please give the email address of the Open Lab account that should receive the plan; if you do not have an account yet, create one first.
Instructors who run a course in which students build and run their own studies should see the teaching page instead; teaching plans cover the whole course. Something else? Write to info@open-lab.online.
